Last week, I received an e-mail response to my recent comments in Creative Loafing about the North Dekalb Mall Idol karaoke singing competition.
The letter, written by runner-up Rebekah Stork*, takes issue with my less-than-flattering description of her singing. I think she was awful. Pardon my Simon-ness, but her pitch was wobbly and her tone and mannerisms sucked the life and charm from the song she chose.
Thanks to the miracle of modern video technology, you can judge Ms. Stork's performance for yourself.
The first video is of winner Curtis Williamson singing "Wind Beneath My Wings." Not my favorite song, or honestly, my favorite style of singing, but the guy's got a strong, unique voice.

Incidentally, Ms. Stork challenged me to a sing-off because, in her estimation, someone who doesn't sing shouldn't be judging people who do (an idea to which my father replied something like "You don't have to be a hen to know if an omelette tastes bad." I might take her up on the offer. I don't think that I'd win. I just think it would be fun to be able to start sentences with the phrase "Remember that time I was in a sing-off . . ."

This is the best post EVER. It's like your very own VHI Behind the Scenes special. I read the letter to the editor and wondered what the hell she was talking about (for I trust your column implicitly). And now, here, for all to hear, is the real story. Love it. Beautiful recovery.

You should have heard Jessica Lowry(the 3rd place contestant) singing and then the question is why was it not Curtis and Jessica battling it out in the final?

now me being in the music world all the time i find that we all have a difrent tast in music some may like rock some may like pop some may even like death metal... i however like it all now i must tell u that i didn't think my sister would win or even come in 2nd but i am proud of her none the less. I found your coments to be a little rude but mine were alot worse and i had to help her practice now mind you she is her own person and i can't make her do anything so how she sang is all up to her. As for the 1st comment how can you judge some one with out even meeting her or knowing what she is like in person for you to put someone down is a distasteful thing to do and as for the "careless whispers" i happend to know that she loves all music and i think she would be inpressed if Mr. Andisheh would sing that and Mr. Andisheh
