I'm attempting to compile a list of songs with lyrics that pay back-handed compliments to a love interest. To qualify for the list, the song must have a lyric that's seemingly intended as a compliment, but would likely be received as an insult if said in real life.
Examples:
"A full commitment's what I'm thinking of, you wouldn't get this from any other guy."
-Rick Astley "Never Gonna Give You Up" -- basically, Rick is saying to a girl, "If wnat you. Nobody ."
"She may not be the best lookin' woman I ever did see, nor have the charms of the ladies of high society, but the woman's got soul"
-Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions "Woman's Got Soul". Just because it's true, doesn't mean someone wants to be told that they're neither good looking nor charming.
You get the idea.
Can you think of any others?
If I get enough, I'll make a mix CD. If I make a mix CD, I'll make a copy for anyone who offers a suggestion. You wouldn't get that from any other guy.

"I used to love to make you cry
It made me feel like a man inside
But if I'd been a man in reality
You'd still be here, babe, lovin' me
Now the nights are long and lonely
And I ain't through strugglin', I just miss you so. And you're too proud you won't give in, but when I think about all I can win."
"Working My Way Back To You"
- Frankie Valli And the Four Seasons
Thunder Road, Sprinsteen.
"You ain't a beauty but hey you're alright."
You're pretty good lookin' (for a girl)
- White Stripes
"Tender Moments"
- Andisheh Nouraee, GarageBand
Not sure whether this qualifies, but it's to be one of the best songs ever, so I'll throw it out there:
"Debra" by Beck:
"I wanna get with you (only you girl) ...
And your sister ...
I think her name is Debra"

P.S. The penning of the line "I said, 'Lady, step inside my Hyundai'" could be the greatest moment in American lyrical history.
not truly applicable, but:
Pina Colada song, by Rupert Holmes.
He's cruising the personal columns while his 'lady' is sleeping. they end up with each other, but both were ready to jump ship in a heartbeat with someone else.
What's that song from the soundtrack of Disney's Country Bear Jamboree that Liver Lips McGraw sang? The line I remember from it goes "She ain't purdy. But I ain't, too. I love her only 'cuz her heart is true." Not sure if this is a cover tune from back in the day, or if it was written especially for the Country Bear Jamboree show.
These are great. I think I'm going to modify the CD's theme to fit my list. I think it's going to be a collection of love songs that aren't loving, sexy or romantic. The early contender for the lead-off track is "Feel Like Makin' Love"
Not "Making Love (Out of Nothin' at All)"?
