NYPD spied on law-abiding American citizens before the Republican National Convention, held in NYC in 2004.

Watch carefully for the reaction of Republicans to this story. It's a litmus test. Remember, Republicans are the self-professed party of individual freedom and small government. Spying on American citizens solely because they wish to publicly express a political viewpoint isn't small government anything. It's totalitarianism. Police infiltratration of church groups and theatre troupes doesn't honor conservative values, unless you're East German.
